After writing the Haiku poem, I began brain storming ideas about 'visual metaphors' to the themes I'm trying to show.
I started by using the analogy of the mantis being consumed by their mate during mating. This led me to the idea of smoke consuming fire when it is extinguished. This then led me onto the thought of a person trying to rekindle a fire that has gone out from warm ashes underneath the smoke. However, there is too much ash for a fire to burn again; so the person trying to relight the fire is just engulfed by smoke.
Bringing this idea further, I though about the idea of starting the film with smoke and a cold feel; then finishing the film with fire and a warm feel. This mean I will be using colour and tone in ways to convey this.
Additionally, to convey feelings of unrequited love, I thought about including certain objects that reflect love; such as a rose or a heart shaped necklace and including them in scenes that are cold. For instance, the rose being thrown on the flames to try and light the fire again; or the heart shaped necklace falling into a sink as the protagonist washes his face. This being a symbol of unrequited love by means of a heart being drowned.
In conclusion, I have started to piece together the plot points for the film.
- Protagonist tries to relight a dying fire full of smoke
- As a result, he keeps choking himself but holds to the hope that it will light again.
- He goes in and washes his face and knocks a heart shaped necklace into the water.
- ~
- He gives up on the fire and begins to whittle new bits of wood under an ash tree
- He brings the whittled wood together and relights it with flint and steel
- He has created a fire that he has created all by himself and feels a warm sense of achievement.
